Abstract

Stigmatization, which is a condition that many people with mental and/or physical illnesses are exposed to, reducing their quality of life and being an obstacle to seeking help, is considered as a part of negative discrimination. People with intellectual disabilities struggle with rejection, exclusion and stigmatization from a very young age. They have to defend themselves by staying away from society or hiding their diseases, which increases mortality beyond reducing their quality of life. Although it mostly affects people in low and middle-income countries, it is actually a problem that affects the whole world. Although the number of studies on stigmatization for people with intellectual disability is increasing in the society, more studies are needed.
