Abstract

Children with disabilities are a vulnerable group at high risk of child abuse and neglect and therefore deserve special attention to reduce this risk. Detection of suspected abuse and neglect is necessary to treat the current situation and protect the child from a later, perhaps more serious injury. It is crucial to develop a multidisciplinary approach, in collaboration with the caregiver or parents. Caregivers rarely aim to harm the child. Recognizing that children with disabilities are at much higher risk, pediatricians and other healthcare professionals play an active role in preventing, identifying, and evaluating potential neglect and abuse of these children.
