Abstract

It has been estimated that 1.4 million children are blind globally, threequarters of whom are from developing countries. Visual impairment may limit social interaction and have a negative impact on individuals’ social and emotional development. Children with visual impairments may present with more emotional and behavioral difficulties than their sighted peers. Although blindness in children is relatively uncommon, in terms of years of disability, it poses a heavy burden on the individual, the family and society. It is essential to improve awareness among health care workers at all levels about the need for preventive measures, and the importance of early identification and treatment of children with eye disease. Appropriate training, facilities, equipment and specialist skills are required to manage surgically curable conditions, and to provide support services.
